Description
Impressive Louis XV cartel clock with rosewood veneer, attributed to Chavellier, Paris, c. 1870 A beautiful, bulbous, curved case veneered in rosewood with lavish gilded bronze decoration (volutes, acanthus leaves, heads); atop it sits Athena holding her spear and shield, accompanied by the original, matching wall bracket. The case is in good condition for its age (has been polished with shellac), showing traces of old worm damage (only in the upper part of the clock, inactive), a minor repair on the left side of the hat; the gilding on the bronze is well preserved, with slight discolouration in places. Unfortunately, the feather plume on Athena’s helmet is missing. Gilded dial with applied enamel cartouches featuring Roman numerals. Blued, fleur-de-lys steel hands. Typical, angular movement with a Broco escapement and half-hour and hour chimes (lock disc) striking an upper bell; marked ‘Chavellier a Paris’ on the dial side. The movement has been expertly overhauled and is now fully functional again. Height: 132 cm Width: 48 cm Depth: 21 cm Pictures of the movement and the back will follow.
