Description
A large, heavy Gründerzeit desk set with a small marble and bronze clock This elegant set is a must-have for any Gründerzeit study. The heavy marble plinth (Verte de Pyrenees) is supported by four lion’s paws, with laurel tendrils inlaid at the sides; the clock mechanism is mounted at the front, above which, in the centre, stands an imposing eagle clutching a bundle of lightning bolts (Zeus as an eagle), flanked by two large inkwells. The gilding is well preserved (though worn in a few places); the inside of the right-hand inkwell is slightly discoloured due to aggressive ink; the small marble plinth supporting the eagle is slightly chipped at one corner. The small insert movement with cylinder escapement is in mint condition and fully functional; it has recently been overhauled by a master watchmaker. The small enamelled dial with Arabic numerals and floral decoration is signed ‘J. Bautiel A Paris 119 R ???’.
