Description
A very fine, fire-gilt Empire-style bronze pendulum clock bearing the inscription ‘Love triumphs over war’, Paris, c. 1810 A very unusual and extremely rare motif. A plinth resting on four spherical feet, divided by an acanthus leaf moulding and featuring applied reliefs (helmet, flower basket, bushel, a crown, an arrow, etc.); above this, on the right, stands a throne draped in a cloak (featuring delicate floral decoration and two lion’s paws), on which rests a sword and a helmet, flanked by two courting doves; to the left of this stands a winged Cupid on one leg, triumphantly holding aloft two wreaths, whilst in his other hand he holds his bow. The original fire-gilding (matt and polished) is in good condition; the polish (on the sides) is worn, and the base has been restored in the past (not visible) The functioning movement, featuring a thread-suspension pendulum, lever escapement and lock-disc striking mechanism (full and half hours), has been expertly overhauled and adjusted; it runs for approximately 8 days, and is unmarked. The enamelled dial with Roman numerals is in good condition (slight hairline cracks above the centre). Dimensions: Height: 40 cm Width: 29.5 cm Depth: 13.5 cm A matching pendulum and a key are included in the offer. The last image is for size comparison only.
