Description
Rare Berlin Classicist portal clock, pendulum clock and mantel clock, circa 1800 Case in the form of an antique-style temple on a stepped (mahogany-veneered), semi-circular plinth, with fine chequerboard inlays (pear wood and ebony), divided by four alabaster columns (one column has a crack, at the rear right), glazed back panel (amalgam mirror); the upper section is also decorated with mahogany and fine band inlays, as is the underside (flamed pear wood veneer), on the right and left, three small ebony columns each (one tip missing) to which gilded chains are attached; the top is crowned by a gilded lion. The case is in good to very good condition, as expected. Round Berlin movement (modelled on a Parisian pendulum movement) with an anchor escapement (hook escapement) and half-hour and hour chimes on the original bronze bell; power reserve approximately 6 days. The movement has been cleaned, some bearings replaced and the axle spacings corrected. Unlike French movements, this movement does not have screw-fastened clamps (for the minute wheel, small base wheel and lifting pin wheel); the striking mechanism’s release lever is mounted on the axis of the fall lever (not on a separately screwed-in pin), the escapement springs are arranged radially (in a circle) around the escapement wheels; furthermore, the brass alloy is very light in colour (indicating a higher zinc content in the brass), and the tooth profile is also typical of the German region. Enamelled dial with Arabic numerals, retouched at the edge and below the 5; hand-sawn, blued steel hands. The original sun-shaped pendulum and key are included in the offer. Clocks of this type were usually placed on the massive Berlin secretaries; consequently, this clock has no feet (the underside is covered with felt). Dimensions: Height: 44.5 cm Width: 34.5 cm Depth: 19 cm A matching pendulum and a key are included in the offer.
