Description

Paircase pocket watch with rake-anchor escapement by Clement Gonland of Sunderland, 1809 High-quality, functioning movement with finely engraved balance cock, chain and worm gear, as well as a rake-type escapement; flat three-arm steel balance wheel with overlying balance spring; diamond regulator; the plates, balance cock and regulator are fire-gilded; original dust cover. It is signed ‘Clement Gonland Sunderland’. The watch runs well, with a fairly large amplitude for a watch of this design. A distinctive feature is the rake-type escapement: the escape wheel and balance are connected here by a pinion (on the balance staff) and a toothed ring on the escape wheel. The cases show typical signs of wear but are well preserved. The inner case is marked with the striding lion (Sterling Silver 925/1000), the crowned leopard’s head (London) and the hallmark ‘O’ for 1809. The flat Arabic dial with Roman numerals has a slight hairline crack at XII. Diameter: 5.7 cm
