Description

Fire-gilded Empire-style bronze pendulum clock ‘Venus and Cupid’, c. 1820 The case is supported by four conical feet; the two-part plinth is divided by a band of acanthus leaves running all the way round. The movement is mounted in the centre, above which Cupid, floating on a cloud, appears to be responding to the entreaties of Venus – A small bowl of water suffices; to the right is a small water spout alongside a shell-shaped basin. The case has been completely dismantled, all individual parts carefully cleaned and subsequently reassembled. The original fire-gilding is in good condition (apart from age-related wear; one foot has been replaced (front right to rear); a small hole in the plinth has been filled and is partially concealed by the front fitting). The movement, with a thread suspension and hook escapement, has been running for about a week and strikes the half and full hours on a bell; it is clean and fully functional. Unfortunately, the enamelled dial with Roman numerals is damaged around the winding mechanisms (concealed by protective rings) and has hairline cracks. Dimensions: Height: 33 cm Width: 28.5 cm Depth: 10 cm The key, pendulum and a bell are included in the offer.
