Description

Large portal clock in Carrara marble with fire-gilded bronze fittings Cellier A Paris Louis XVI, c. 1785 Rising from the square plinth, which features bronze inlays and a beaded moulding, are four columns (round and fluted at the front, and flat and curved at the rear, with acanthus leaf decoration) made of Carrara), which support the clock body. This is in turn surrounded by two bouquets of flowers and two fruit clusters; the upper section is crowned by an eagle spreading its wings, and beneath the dial is a Wedgwood plaque (added later) surrounded by laurel leaves. The fire-gilt fittings are in good condition; the gilding on the clock case is partially worn; the marble is partially chipped at the corners and on the black columns, and is slightly discoloured. The movement, featuring a thread suspension mechanism and half-hour and hour striking mechanisms, has been fully overhauled and reset by a master clockmaker; it runs for approximately 14 days. The enamel dial is undamaged and is signed ‘Cellier A Paris’. Dimensions: Height: 57 cm Width: 40 cm Depth: 14 cm The pendulum, key and a bell are included in the offer. A similar clock can be seen in *La Pendule Francaise*, Pierre Kjellberg, p. 190, fig. A. *La Pendule Francaise 2ème Partie*, Tardy, p. 270
