Description
Large Josephine-style grandfather clock, Vienna, c. 1780, with weekly movement Height: 68.5 cm Set upon the broad base, painted to resemble malachite, is a rock with a waterfall at its centre, flanked by two putti; above this stands Apollo playing his lyre alongside a crowned companion, with the clockwork mechanism set into the centre of the rock. The case is made of stuccoed and gilded lime wood; the gilding is likely to be the original, although it has been repainted in some places (see photographs). In some areas, the stucco has flaked off from certain parts of the figures (Apollo’s foot, the swan’s neck, both putti) show traces of glue; one hand is partially missing (right-hand putto) as are two attributes. Nevertheless, the case shows no signs of insect damage or mould and therefore provides a good basis for restoration; the original back panel bears an old inventory sticker. The functioning movement, featuring a pendulum suspended by a thread, an anchor escapement and a rake strike mechanism (full and half hours), is in good condition for its age; this movement runs for about two weeks rather than the usual 36 hours, but is nevertheless from Vienna and not from France (see construction). The enamelled dial with Arabic numerals is in a good state of preservation; the gold-plated hands are also likely to be the originals. The original bell and pendulum are also included, and a matching key is provided. Dimensions: Height: 68.5 cm Width: 47.5 cm Depth: 21.5 cm The figure of Apollo and a cherub will be dismantled for dispatch; however, I cannot rule out the possibility that one of the remaining figures might break off.
