Description
Rare English grandfather clock with a chime of 8 bells by Edward Faulkner, London, circa 1730 Extremely elaborate dial with a silver-plated, hand-engraved numeral ring (fleur-de-lys half-hour markers) featuring Roman and Arabic numerals, a matt centre with a seconds dial and a small date window above the VI; in the arch, the moon phase; below that, the signature band ‘Ed Faulkner London’ with the melody name (‘Happy Clown / A Rigadoon’) and a setting lever; elaborately crafted Baroque putto spandrels. Presumably original, hand-sawn steel hands A very fine, large movement with 6 ‘ring-turned’ work pillars, anchor escapement, rattle chime on the hour, date mechanism, and a musical movement playing on 8 bells (each individually screwed in place) with 16 hammers; at quarter, 2/4 and 3/4 chimes, it plays one of the two manually selectable melodies at the top of the hour (a very lovely, delicate sound). The movement has been overhauled, set and adjusted. The large, solid oak case was probably added or remodelled at a later date to reflect the tastes of the time (1790); it is thought to originate from Liège. It has been repainted several times (white), with partial loss of paint and scratched glazing; see the photographs for details. Height: 240 cm Width: 51 cm Depth: 28 cm Dial: 38.5 cm x 22.5 cm Edward Faulkner is listed with ‘Baillie’, as a journeyman from 1692, a member of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1702 and a master from 1734. 3 pendulums, weights and a crank are included in the offer. Collection only from 98701 Grossbreitenbach.
