Description

A unique, museum-quality bronze ‘Mozart’ pendulum clock, burnished and fire-gilded, movement marked ‘Honoré Pons’ Paris, c. 1827 Please note!!! Shipping is by freight forwarder only, at a cost of €50 The plinth, divided by a broad acanthus leaf moulding, rests on the massive, florally curved feet; at its centre is a bouquet comprising numerous musical instruments (horn, guitar, timpani, etc.) as well as palmettes and laurel leaves; the corners are adorned with imposing floral appliqués, inscribed with ‘La finta semplice 1770’ and ‘Don Giovanni 1787’ Above this sits Mozart, dressed in numerous sumptuous robes and composing at his desk (with a music book and a violin, alongside writing implements). The opulent table rests on two sphinxes. Only the small pen in his right hand is missing. The case is of outstanding quality and undoubtedly originates from a Parisian master’s workshop; all parts are marked with an ‘M’, whilst the base is inscribed with ‘Mozart’ on the underside. The dial, crafted from silver-plated bronze and exquisitely guilloché (protected by a glass bezel), is in good original condition; it is marked ‘Raingo f. Pons’ on the reverse. Please see the photographs for the condition of the dial and the case (the bluing is slightly worn). The fine Parisian pendulum movement, featuring a hook escapement and half-hour strike (via a lock disc), has been fully overhauled by a master watchmaker and runs for approximately 14 days; it is marked several times with ‘Pons Medaille D’or 1827’, whilst the springs are marked ‘1826’. The offer includes a matching thread pendulum (added) and a key. Dimensions of the clock: Height: 64 cm Width: 45 cm Depth: 18 cm A wonderful and collectable clock of outstanding quality.
