Description

French lantern clock with cartouche dial, circa 1780, serviced, running time approx. 5 days Movement with a typical iron prismatic frame, featuring a running and striking mechanism arranged one behind the other (striking on the hour and half-hour to a bell situated above), running mechanism with an anchor escapement. The original alarm mechanism was removed at some point (hence the central brass disc on the dial) The movement has been fully overhauled (electrolytically derusted, surfaces sealed (with oil or wax), pivots and anchor re-ground and polished, bearings replaced, striking mechanism re-adjusted and lubricated) The gear train has one more stage of reduction than is usual for these clocks, hence the increased running time; a longer rope could also be used, which would allow for a running time of 7 days (though it would then need to be hung at a correspondingly greater height – approx. 230 fall height). Cartouche dial with cock clasp; the cartouches are well preserved apart from minor chips; unfortunately, the signed cartouche is missing; the dial sits slightly off-centre (see photos), but the drill holes and the spacing of the fixings are correct (possibly due to manufacturing). Dimensions: Height: 42 cm Width: 21 cm Depth: 19 cm Height of the workbench: 82 cm Three weights, an old pendulum and a solid oak workbench are included in the offer.
