Description
Fire-gilded Directoire bronze pendule mantel clock, Paris, c. 1795 Black marble plinth supported by four feet with a surrounding beaded moulding; openwork bronze frame featuring a large lyre, flanked on the right and left by a cherub each, together with a cornucopia and floral decoration; above this, the dial crowned by the caduceus. The fire-gilding is in good condition for its age; the top section has been soldered with silver once (the solder joints have been re-gilded – see photographs); only the frame (polished gilding) shows signs of wear. The case has been completely dismantled, all individual parts carefully cleaned and subsequently reassembled. The functioning movement, featuring a spring suspension (converted from a thread suspension in the 19th century) and a hook escapement, runs for approximately one week and strikes the half and full hours on a bell; it has been fully overhauled and readjusted, and is unmarked. Unfortunately, the enamelled dial with Roman numerals is damaged at the VI due to improper assembly; there is also a hairline crack at the XII. Delicate fire-gilded lily-shaped hands. Dimensions: Height: 38.5 cm Width: 25 cm Depth: 11 cm The key, pendulum and a bell are included in the offer.
