Description

Exceptional fire-gilded bronze pendule clock, ‘Cupid Floating on the Clouds’, Empire period, c. 1820 An architecturally structured, multi-part base resting on four spherical feet, featuring several applied decorations on the front (acanthus leaves, with a central plaque depicting Psyche scattering flowers), upon which, on the right, the young Cupid floats on a cloud, holding an arrow in his left hand and a butterfly in his right (as a symbol of transience); on the left, on a tall pedestal, stands a jug; and in the centre, above the dial, a torch and a quiver set within a wreath of flowers. The fire-gilding is in very good condition (barely any wear); only the polished areas show slight scuffing. Fully functional, very delicate round pendulum movement with a lock-disc strike for the full and half hours on a bell, an anchor escapement and a thread pendulum; power reserve approximately 8 days. The enamelled dial with Roman numerals is very well preserved; the reverse is marked ‘Dub.’ for Henri François Dubuisson (active 1769–1823) of Paris, A matching pendulum, key and bell are included. Height: 36.5 cm Width: 25.5 cm Depth: 8 cm
