Description
An interesting English grandfather clock with moon phase and central seconds by William Tarlton of Liverpool, circa 1800; the movement has recently been overhauled Typical mahogany (Cuban) case, featuring a simple, square plinth with a recessed, continuous moulding; above this, a curved door (warped); and at the top, a crown with a pediment and a glazed door flanked by two columns. Shows signs of wear typical of its age; a missing section in the panelling on the right-hand side; some mouldings have missing sections; the clock was presumably shortened at some point – see photographs. Large arched dial with Roman numerals, a recess for the moon phase, central seconds hand, signed W. Tarlton Liverpool (according to G. H. Billie, William Tarleton of Liverpool was a watchmaker of good repute) Movement with brass plates, lever escapement and hour strike on a bell; this has recently been overhauled (10 bearings re-centred, re-ground and replaced; pivots polished; lever ground and polished; cleaning, assembly and lubrication; pendulum spring replaced, new hemp ropes fitted). The date wheel (month-day date) is missing; it was centrally mounted on the same shaft as the hour, minute and second hands. The pendulum, weights and crank are present.
