Description

An elegant portal clock in fire-gilt bronze by Gaston Jolly, Paris, Directoire period, circa 1795 The two finely chiselled columns rise from the square plinth supported by four flattened feet, with an octagonal medallion featuring an antique motif between them. The dial is crowned by an eagle. The fire-gilding is in good condition apart from some minor wear; the two rear feet were presumably added at a later date. The movement, featuring a thread suspension and half-hour and hour striking mechanisms, has been fully overhauled and reset by a master watchmaker; it runs for approximately 14 days. The enamel dial is undamaged apart from a crack at the level of the X; it is signed ‘Gaston Jolly A Paris’. Gaston Jolly was awarded his master’s certificate on 6 May 1784; amongst others, he supplied Bernard Charles Louis Victor, Marquis de Lostanges (chamberlain to Napoleon). Dimensions: Height: 35 cm Width: 21 cm Depth: 9 cm Height including glass dome: 46 cm The pendulum, key and a bell are included in the offer.
