Description
A unique, heavy bronze pendulum clock, ‘Caritas Romana’, from France, circa 1820 A plinth supported by four feet, divided by an acanthus-leaf moulding and featuring applied floral decorations. Centred above this is the movement set into a rock, flanked by a depiction of ‘Caritas Romana’ (legend of Valerius Maximus). The plinth is made of yellow Siena marble; there are touch-ups and repairs to the lower part of the plinth. The case is in good condition for its age; the original burnishing shows age-related wear and a few stains. Guilloché, fire-gilded dial with Roman numerals; removable, glazed serpentine bezel. Blued Breguet hands. The movement features a time and striking mechanism for the full and half hours on a single bell, an anchor escapement, and a power reserve of 14 days; the movement has been expertly overhauled and is fully functional. A matching pendulum and 1 key are included. A very unusual and possibly unique clock, not recorded as such in the literature. For further details, see the photographs. Height: 63 cm Width: 50 cm Depth: 18 cm Due to its size and fragility, collection in person only (98701 Großbreitenbach) or personal delivery by arrangement
