Description

The exquisite clock case is made of oak, which has been veneered with thick mahogany sawn veneer; the door features two exquisitely crafted spandrels and a gilded glass surround, and the top is glazed to allow the most unobstructed view possible of the exquisitely crafted movement. In a few places, a small section of the applied decorative mouldings is missing. The movement is a typical London movement with gut string and snail, as well as an hour strike on a silver-bronze bell; the back plate is exquisitely engraved with floral decoration. Evidently, the movement (as is often the case with such clocks) was converted from a spindle escapement to an anchor escapement towards the end of the 18th century (very neatly done) The dial is exquisitely hand-engraved; the engravings are inlaid with black wax and the dial is rubbed silver, and it is marked ‘Smith London’. Overall, a very high-quality and rare clock. The pendulum and a matching key are included in the offer. Clock dimensions: Height: 52 cm Width: 27 cm Depth: 19 cm
